Sapa changes character with the seasons, so the 'best' time depends on what you want to see.
March to May: green and mild
Spring brings comfortable temperatures, flowers and freshly planted terraces. It is a good time for trekking, with fewer crowds than autumn.
June to August: lush but wet
Rice is deep green and the valleys are dramatic, but expect rain and mist. Trails can be slippery, so wear shoes with good grip.
September to October: golden rice
This is the classic season. Terraces turn gold around harvest time, skies are often clear and trekking is at its best. It is also the busiest period, so book early.
November to February: cold and misty
Winter is chilly, often foggy, and can be very cold at night, with occasional frost. Bring warm layers. The upside is quiet trails and a cosy atmosphere.
How long to stay
We suggest two to three nights: one day for Fansipan and Cat Cat, one for a full trek through Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van, and a slower day for the Rong May glass bridge or Ham Rong Mountain.
